Uma forte característica do nosso PPG é o intercâmbio internacional, caracterizado por número expressivo de teses e publicações conjuntas com Instituições de Pesquisa no exterior, o qual promove entre o nosso corpo discente crescente interesse no doutorado sanduíche, assim como no pós-doutorado internacional. Nossa principal parceria internacional é com o Departamento de Oftalmologia da Universidade de McGill, no Canadá, coordenada pelo Prof. Miguel Burnier Jr., atualmente professor orientador do nosso Programa. Mais de 34 pós-graduandos desenvolveram suas teses no Departamento de Oftalmologia da Universidade de McGill orientados pelo Prof. Burnier, em área de conhecimento peculiar, ausente no nosso Programa e na nossa Universidade, que é o estudo da patologia ocular moderna, que incluí várias técnicas de hibridização in situ, imunofluorescência e imunohistoquímica avançada, com biomarcadores, entre outros.
